What would happen if your sound system failed?
Dancing would stop, customers would go home and may even demand some form of compensation.

So what can cause failure in a sound system?
1.Amplifiers and loudspeakers.
Usually there is more than one so a failure would impair the system but not be disastrous.
2.Turntables and other sources.
Again there will be more than one so a failure would be inconvenient but not disastrous.
3.The mixer. The heart of the system.
If the mixer fails or has a drink spilt over it, total system failure will result in NO SOUND! It does happen and the cost can be substantial.

Formula Sound has addressed this problem and created The Shadow standby mixer, a dedicated low cost mixer with enough facilities to keep the music playing in an emergency or when the main mixer needs an essential service.

The complexity of technology used in entertainment venue sound and lighting systems continues to increase. Despite generally high standards of build and reliability, occasional malfunctions do occur and can have immediate and serious economic implications for the venue operator.

The Shadow backup mixer can be installed as part of a new sound system or can easily be retro-fitted. It has all the switching required to replace the main mixer instantly in the event of trouble. Simply switch on the unit and this causes internal relays to re-route four stereo music input sources, one microphone and the output connections, to be controlled by The Shadow. Music is restored and the customers remain happy.

The Shadow has one microphone channel and four stereo music channels, two of which are equalised to RIAA for phono cartridges. (RIAA inputs can be selected internally to a normal line input if required).

PFL (Pre-fade listen) switches are provided on the four music channels for cueing purposes. All inputs have a pre-set gain control accessible through holes in the rear panel. The microphone channel has an illuminated ON/OFF switch for ease of operation.

2 band equalisation is provided via pre-sets on the back panel, for the mic channel.

To keep the size of the unit as small as possible rotary controls are used. The only exception is a cross-fader which fades between channels 1 & 2 and 3 & 4. The cross-fader may be switched off if not required. A master volume control and headphone control, with associated jack socket, are also provided on the front panel.

The Shadow is also designed to operate perfectly well on its own, in a mobile or small system, when only basic facilities are required.
